This opportunity is open to anybody that has a keen interest in working in the security industry. There are a wide range of roles dependent on your suitability or area of interest. Roles include: Crowd Control, Access Control, Static Guarding, Property Security, Mobile Patrols, Personal Guarding, Technicians and even Leadership roles if you have a bit more experience.

The security industry is open to people of various ages, ethnicities, genders and abilities, however there are some criteria that you need to meet in order to be considered for a Certificate of Approval (COA). A COA is required to be able to work in the security industry and is assessed and issued by the PSPLA, a tribunal of the Ministry of Justice.

To be considered for a Certificate of Approval:

  • You must be over the age of 18 years of age,

  • You cant have any serious criminal convictions in NZ or overseas,

  • You cant have been detained in hospital for mental illness and

  • You are legally permitted to work in NZ

You will need a form of photo identification that includes either a Passport, NZ Drivers Licence, 18+ Card, Kiwi Access Card or Firearms Licence.

Security can be a "high risk" environment so you will need to be able to pass a pre-employment drug/ alcohol test if requested. You need to be "on your game" to keep yourself and others safe.

The Skills and Strengths of a good Security staff member include:

  • Reliability and punctuality

  • Good communication skills

  • Alert and observant

  • Able to work without supervision or as part of a team

  • Pride in your appearance

  • Friendly and approachable

  • Able to work shifts (sometimes up to 12 hours)

  • A reasonable level of physical fitness is an advantage

If you are accepted on to the programme we will work with you to submit an application for a Temporary Certificate of Approval from the PSPLA. (We cover the cost of this). The PSPLA will complete the required background checks and if there are no problems, you will be issued with your Temporary COA and you are in a position to be able to work in the industry.

Before we refer you to Employers, we will take you through some basic pre-employment training that covers many of the important aspects of security work.

If and when you are offered employment by a Security company they will complete their necessary induction training and then within the early stages of your employment you will be booked to complete your Mandatory Security Training. This is generally a 2 day course that provides you with further entry-level knowledge and skill to help you start your journey. Upon completion of this course, you are awarded with NZQA unit standards and your COA is then upgraded to a Full Certificate of Approval that is valid for 5 years.

As you spend more time in the security sector you will continue to develop your skills through experience and ongoing training on the job. Some employers will also encourage you to complete higher qualifications to make you an even more valuable asset.
